You can tour the historic Carlyle House at 121 N. Fairfax Street, in Old Town Alexandria. This 1753 mansion was remodeled and restored to showcase the rich architectural detail and authentic paint colors. You’ll also find fine furnishings and manicured grounds complete with brick walkways, boxwood parterres, and more. The 18th century Carlyle House was a social and political center for the area. Not only did George Washington visit the house, but it was also the location of one of the most important historic meetings of its time. In 1755, Major General Edward Braddock, the commander-in-chief of British forces in North America, asked Colonial governors to tax colonists so that he could finance a campaign against the French and Indians. The main chamber of the house is the most important part of the home. It was the living quarters of the Carlyles and is located on the right side of the house. The room has two windows facing the street, and was decorated with a portrait of John Carlyle’s mother, which was painted when she was in her twenties. There’s a replica of the famous weeding dress of Sarah Carlyle, which is a closed-bodied gown with a petticoat and which has a mechanism to fold up when she passes through the narrow doors.

The Potomac Riverboat Company offers sightseeing cruises, water taxis, and docking stations. You can also visit Tide Lock Park, which was once a canal system. Once upon a time, this waterfront area was home to the famous Carlyle House. A visit to Tide Lock Park will be worth your while.
