The Virginia Renaissance Faire was a hit but has since moved to another location. The fair was founded in 1936 and has hosted numerous events and performances over the years. The historic Gadsby Tavern, located at 523 Queen Street, is another historic site that is worth a visit. This townhouse with a surprisingly intimate seating capacity is located within the historic district and features a museum that highlights the history of Alexandria and freemasonry in America. The 333-foot-tall structure is designed to resemble the old Lighthouse of Alexandria. The museum features nine floors dedicated to different topics. The town is also a great place for outdoor adventures. The portside festival has become the Alexandria Jazz Fest. The event takes place on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea and features poetry from Alexandria’s poet laureate Zeina Azzam, folk-rock, and Ethiopian reggae. Other attractions in Alexandria include lawn games, tours of the tall ship Providence, and a beer garden hosted by Port City Brewing Company.
